#The Rape of Lucrece

Duration: 120 min

The diploma production “#The Rape of Lucrece”, inspired by William Shakespeare’s poem, examines the problem of sexual violence towards women and of the universal imperceptibility of its sources. To what extent do classical cultural texts treat the suffering of the protagonists with empathy and can they still be a source of knowledge about the problems of contemporary women? Or maybe they simply replicate patriarchal models and impregnate them in the minds of female and male audiences, female and male theatrical artists, which inevitably leads to the maintenance in a vicious circle of the fetishisation and sanctification of violence towards women as a canon, an unchanging history of the world, particularly of European culture.

“The young students of the theatrical arts have used their numerous vocal, dance and comedy talents in a particular vivisection of the culture of rape and of the conventions connected with it. The whole is not only audio-visually attractive; it also writes itself into the current social discourse.”

Wiktoria Tabak, “Teatralia”
