Words, Words, Words, Reworded – Translating a Classic / Marin Držić in English

FILIP KRENUS, HONEY TONGUED THEATRE PRODUCTIONS, UK

This lecture will be an introduction to the performance ”Uncle Maroye Re-Examined”, presented by artists from the House of Marin Držić from Croatia and Midsummer Scene from UK. The performance will be shown twice on 1st of August at Apteka (Wybrzeże Theatre). Filip Krenus has translated the play into English.

How did Dubrovnik produce the foremost Slavic Renaissance playwright – Marin Držić? What are, if any, connections and similarities between Držić and Shakespeare? And what are the challenges of translating into English a play from 1551, while retaining the original shape and form?
